On Friday, May 16, Willits Kids Club members of all ages will take up shovels, trowels, and anything else that can be used to turn soil to break ground for the Kids Club”s new Discovery Park and Playground. ?The ground breaking will occur at 5 p.m. during the Kids Club”s annual carnival at the Kids Club on Blosser Lane, behind Blosser Lane School. The public is invited to attend the event. ?Healthy food will be available for purchase, and there will be activities for children including a bounce house and game booths.
The Discovery Park, when finished, will have enhanced natural features for outdoor exploration and play, including hills, tunnels, gathering places, trees and other landscaping, and a rope climbing tower.?
?Mendocino Construction was awarded the contract to build the park, and expects to start construction as soon as school is out and continue through the summer.? The project is funded in part with funds from a State of California Parks and Recreation grant, and also by the bequest of Ventura Perez, a former Willits resident and Willits High School student body president. ?The project has received important support from the Community Foundation of Mendocino County, ReLeaf, Dave Watts and Sanhedrin Nursery, and Dave Madrigal. ?The enduring vision for this natural outdoor area for the children of the community has been held for many years by Kids Club Executive Director Kris Wagner.
A grand opening for the new park will take place in the fall, when construction is expected to be complete and the park will be ready for play.
